First Nations were excluded from Confederation and then systemically legislated out of the Canadian economy. Our jurisdictions were assigned to other governments. Our treaty rights were ignored, title was not acknowledged, and our resources were taken without consent or consideration of impacts. Our revenue-raising powers were legislated out of existence. As a result, we were unable to legally contest this injustice, which allowed land to be removed from reserves and resources to be extracted from traditional territory without consent or proper compensation. As we know, this has contributed to a legacy of First Nation dependency and poverty.
